Statement from the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) on delayed release of monthly grants to the University of Zambia.

On Friday, December 20, 2024, the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) through the general secretary Dr Mambwe issued a press statement addressing the ongoing salary delays affecting University of Zambia employees. Below is the full statement as released by UNZALARU.

The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) is compelled to
express its deep concern and urgency regarding the persistent delays in the release of
monthly grants to the University of Zambia (UNZA), which enable the University to pay
salaries to its workers timely. This problem has been ongoing since the start of the year,
2024, and despite efforts by UNZA Management to mitigate the situation, the problem
persists.
For the past two months, particularly, October and November salaries were delayed due
to the late release of the monthly subvention from the Ministry of Finance. These
unacceptable delays have placed our members in a precarious financial position. As we
have stated before, the non-disbursement of salaries on time, severely hampers our
members’ ability to report for work and meet their basic obligations.
In light of this crisis, UNZALARU urgently demands that the necessary funds be released
immediately to facilitate the timely payment of December 2024 salaries. Furthermore,
we require the prompt release of subsequent grants to ensure that employees receive
their salaries on time, thereby preventing future delays and financial hardship.
We stress that the early remuneration of December salaries is crucial to enable our
members to unwind and peacefully celebrate the festive season with their families and
facilitate the seamless processing of examination results.
We expect a prompt response and resolution to this crisis. Any further disregard for the
welfare of UNZA employees will not be supported as it is not in the best interest of the
workers, the institution and the public.
