Welcome to the University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers' Union(UNZALARU) website.

The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) is the biggest academic Union in Zambia, whose primary role is to:
--> Negotiate wages and working condition terms.
--> Regulate relations between workers (its members) and the employer.
--> Take collective action to enforce the terms of collective bargaining;
--> Raise new demands on behalf of its members;
--> Help settle members’ grievances; and
--> Provide members with social and welfare services.

Background

The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) is trade union originally established as an Academic Association in 1992. In 1993 UNZALARU entered into a Recognition Agreement with the University of Zambia (UNZA) Council and was registered as a Trade Union under the Industrial Relations Act of 1991 of the Laws of Zambia.

Governance Structure

The Union is governed by an Executive Committee (EC) whose mandate is given by the members every four years through an election. The Executive Committee is headed by a President who is assisted by the Vice President and the General Secretary.
It also has a wing for the Women’s Committee (WC). This wing is run by a team of female members of the Union headed by the Chairperson assisted by the Secretary and three Committee members. The role of the WC is to:
Propose and implement policy guidelines relating to affairs of women members and shall be under the supervision of the General Secretary;
Advise women members on matters affecting them and determination of strategies intended to ensure their effective participation in national development;
Strengthen levels of interaction between women members and their male counterparts.
Strategise on financial generation activities/programmes beneficial to female members.
