On 2nd September 2026, your union, The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU), represented by the president Professor Andrew Phiri was live on ZNBC Radio 2 to reflect on the inauguration of President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango, and to place the voice of UNZA’s academic community firmly on the national agenda.
The conversation focused on the issues that matter most to our members and to the nation:
Legal and constitutional reforms
Mixed Member Proportional Representation and the composition of Parliament
Pensions and gratuities for our members
Economic progress under the “Stabilisation to Growth” agenda
The welfare of UNZA students and staff
Reflecting on the President’s acceptance and inauguration speeches, the Union examined what the “Stabilisation to Growth” theme could mean in practice for higher education, research, and the livelihoods of academics. UNZALARU maintained that a genuine shift from stabilisation to growth must translate into real investment in the higher education sector and committed to advocating for a university community that is valued, well-resourced, and central to national development.
Our sincere thanks to ZNBC Radio 2 for the platform.
